Fallen Summary

The novel Fallen by author Lauren Kate is the story of a seventeen-year-old girl named Lucinda Prince, who prefers Luce. She is sent to a reform school after being accused of murdering a boy by starting a fire. While enrolled at Sword & Cross Reform School, she meets a boy named Daniel to whom she feels a strong attraction to, and believes she has encountered before. Lucinda arrives at Sword & Cross after her boyfriend at the time, Trevor, supposedly burst into flames after they kissed. The problem is that Lucinda doesn&#;t remember all the details. And what she does remember makes her appear to be mentally unstable. Upon arrival, she quickly becomes friends with a girl named Arianne. Arianne comes in handy, swooping in the save Lucinda from a flirtatious boy named Cam, who has supposedly been to the school before. Enrolling on the same day as Luce is a young boy named Todd and a girl named Gabbe. Arriane, who describes herself as a psychopath, demands Luce give her a haircut to mirror Luce&#;s style. While cutting her hair, Luce notices a scar on Arianne&#;s neck and a shock band on her wrist. Upon this discovery, the two of them promise each other not to question the others past.

On the way to their first class, Luce notices a boy and suddenly becomes nervous. Arianne tells her that his name is Daniel Grigori, and proceeds to mock her for staring at him. Daniel is standing with another boy named Roland, and upon noticing that Luce is staring, Daniel smiles and raises his middle finger towards her.

In class, Luce encounters Cam again, who attempts to flirt with her once more. She still is thinking about Daniel, leaving her distracted throughout the lesson. During lunch, Luce notices Daniel again, and this causes her to stumble backward into a girl named Molly Zane, who retaliates by stomping on Luce&#;s foot. Causing Arriane to start a fight, but the shock bracelet goes off, sending Arriane into convulsions. Randy, the enrollment attendant, arrives and gives all three of them detention. Upon his departure, Molly dumps her lunch tray on Luce&#;s head which Daniel sees, causing Luce to run off in embarrassment.

In the bathroom, she meets Penn, the daughter of the school&#;s old groundskeeper who is now deceased. She says that she chooses to stay at the school because she has no other options. The two become friends as Penn helps to clean Luce up. She tells Luce that she is a &#;very powerful friend to have&#; as she can access anyone&#;s school records.

During detention, Luce and Arriane are partnered up to clean a statue of an &#;avenging angel&#;. Also in detention are Daniel, Roland, and Molly. After a while, Arriane disappears, and Molly arrives to confront Luce and warns her to stay away from Daniel. Upon hearing his name, he comes over after Molly has left to ask what has been said about him. While there, the statue she had been cleaning breaks, and Daniel saves Luce from being crushed and quickly disappears.

Cam invites Luce to a party loudly in front of Daniel, inciting the rivalry between the two of them. At this point, she starts to think that she is developing a crush on Cam, but isn&#;t too sure. During the party, Luce encounters a strange event in which she can grab a Shadow; a paranormal, ink-like smudge that she has seen since childhood. This scares and excites her as she has never been able to interact with them before.

Later on in the story, Daniel and Luce take off to a hidden away lake, where they swim together. It is here that Daniel informs her that he cannot be involved with her romantically as he has previously been &#;burned&#; by someone else.

This novel is shrouded in mystery and leaves you questioning the abrupt disappearances and motives of each character. It is framed to be a slowly revealing book, which keeps you hooked until you understand what the school is. It has dark and light moments and is both riveting and intense as you struggle to piece together the strange happenings at Sword & Cross Reform School.
