I would like to inform you that if you have upgraded Windows 10 from Windows using Upgrade option from the bootable media it will not as for the product key.

When you try to install Windows 10 from a bootable media (DVD) which is downloaded you will get two option one is Custom and other one is Upgrade. For Windows upgrade is free where Custom or Clean installation is not free if you select Custom so it will ask for the Product key.

If you want to perform clean installation then I suggest you to select Upgrade option while installing Windows 10 and upgrade from the Desktop and activate the Windows 10 upgrade and after that perform clean install. In that case it will not ask for product key, any violation of these leads to activation issue.

You can download and create your Windows 10 installation media by following the instructions provided in the advanced discussion below.

As for your product key, you'll need to have that already—or you'll need to purchase one.

If you are referring to your previous product key that's originally linked to your copy of Windows , then your options may change a bit. I've explained all this in the discussion above—but as a summary—you may not be able to use that key to directly activate Windows

You will have to re-install Windows , activate it, and only then will you be able to upgrade to Windows  Please consult the link above for more information.

I did not use bootable media to upgrade.

I had used the option to upgrade available in the upgrade utility.  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool 

When I started the upgrade procedure, i got the following options:

1. Upgrade this PC

2. Create a Bootable Drive to install on other PC

I used the First Option. The installation files were downloaded on my hard drive and the upgrade process started.

The upgrade process was successfully completed. I had not used any USB drive.

After upgrading, i downloaded windows 10 installation files using the same tool as stated above and created a bootable USB drive.

Now Consider the following situation:

Suppose my hard drive has crashed and i want to reinstall windows 10 on my new hard drive. What will be the procedure for the same?

Can i use the bootable USB /DVD which i created after my upgrade was over.  During installation, would I be asked for a product key? If yes, where would i get my product key?

Hi,

You can download the ISO the same way; through the Media Creation Tool.

After you get the free upgrade installed, you can then do a clean install.

There are two versions of the tool, one for a “bit operating system” and one for a “bit operating system.” To find out which you have, go to Start, type Control panel, select System and security, and then, under System, look at the value for System type.

> Run the Tool.

1. If you're upgrading this PC, select Upgrade this PC now, and then follow the rest of the instructions to finish the upgrade.

2. If you want to create media for a different PC, select Create installation media for another PC. Use the table at the link to choose the edition of Windows 10 that you want to create media for.

> If you choose to create Installation Media.

You can install from an ISO, a USB, or a DVD
