OpenAudible Documentation

This Audio Book Manager lets you catalog and organize your audio book collection. It is optimized for Audible users, but can import MP3 audio books as well.

Please respect copyright owners by not distributing MP3 files created with OpenAudible.

Installation

Install the version for your platform. OpenAudible is an unsigned application. Only download from rushbrookrathbone.co.uk which point to our github release pages. You may need to 'approve' the running of OpenAudible from your operating system, and if you use anti-malware or anti-virus apps, you may need to learn how to run unsigned applications.

Choose one of the installers from the official download page. Only bit architectures are supported on x86_64/AMD

• Mac Users: Right-Click and Open the DMG and Application the first time you run.
• Windows Users: Double click installer and click through pages.
  Or install from command line: OpenAudible*rushbrookrathbone.co.uk -q -overwrite
• Linux Users: We now support AppImage, the best way to run and install without root.

Note: Mac users should open the rushbrookrathbone.co.uk file by selecting it in Finder and Control-Clicking the application, then select Open (right-click "Open"). This is due to our not being available in the Apple Store and/or not having a signing certificate. You may also need to update your GateKeeper settings to allow unsigned apps to run.

Optional Setup

OpenAudible by default uses a directory in your Home directory called OpenAudible to save all files.

If you want to use a storage location with more disk space, you can configure your working directory in the Preferences. The working directory will contain Audible files (AAX), MP3 files, artwork, and other program data.

The Web Dir can contain a web page listing of your audible content, a json version of your audiobook meta data, and an MP3 directory with titled audio books.

Connecting to Audible

Accessing your library of books requires using our integrated web browser (Control Menu: Browser CTRL-B).

Use the Connect To Audible command to bring up the OpenAudible browser window. If needed, enter the URL for audible (for your region) into the URL bar at the top of the browser.

When requested, enter your credentials to log into your audible account.

Once logged in to your audible account in the browser, the OpenAudible Library status should change to Connected: Yes.

Once connected, you can do a "Controls: Full Library Sync" to get all of your books, or "Quick Library Sync" to just look for new books.

Be sure to set the first library page to display All books, sorting by 'Date Added'. Then you can either do a 'Full Scan' or 'Quick Scan' of your books.

A quick rescan looks for new books in your library (sorted by date added) and also looks for updated meta data. If none is found on a page, the scan stops.

If you're seeing problems downloading a book, sometimes a full rescan will help. Check the File: Show Console for more details.

Downloading Files

You'll need to download your books from Audible. This can be done by selecting one or more of them from the main window and Selecting Action: Download

We recommend downloading just one to start, and you can watch the download state in the Book Information panel. When its done downloading, you can view the AAX file (to verify its location on disk) by selecting Action: Show AAX. You can download all of your books by selecting Control: Download all Books.

Note: OpenAudible only downloads the full book, not the partial files that may be available for long books. This is a design decision to prevent both full and partial versions of the same book. Downloading and importing partial books is not supported or recommended. Use the "Split by chapter" feature to break full books into smaller parts.

Converting to MP3

Convert your Audible AAX files to MP3 easily by selecting a book and selecting Action: Convert to MP3 or convert them all by Controls: Convert All to MP3

OpenAudible uses a very good quality of MP3 encoding. However, advanced users can adjust the quality settings to make smaller files or higher quality audio. This can be done by editing the "mp3Qscale" settings in the rushbrookrathbone.co.uk file with a value between 0 and 9, with 9 being the lowest quality and smallest file.

Audible files are kept in the AAX directory. Once converted to MP3, you may decide to delete the AAX files to save space.

Audible Settings

Audible has a setting you need to change if you have problems downloading books.

If you see a message about How To Listen or an alert about the need to change a setting, follow these instructions.

Ensure the Check for Audible Download Manager setting is unchecked, try downloading a file again.

Main Window

From left to right, top to bottom, the OpenAudible main window has a search bar, version/news indicator, Library Status Panel, Audio Book Info, Summary Panel, and Audio Book table that lists your books.

Searching

The search bar at the top right of the app allows you to filter books by keywords. Use CTRL-F to activate the search. Use Escape to clear the search results and display all books.

To the right, a line of text displays the current version, and if there are any upgrades or news available.

Library Status

This shows your library stats.

These stats are updated periodically and reflect our best attempt at determining these values. For instance, Hours depends on being able to determine a book's duration.

• Connected: Shows true or false if "connected" to your audible account.
• Region: The audible region you are using (US, AU, UK, FR, DE, IN, DE).
• Books: Total books managed by the application.
• Hours: Total listening time of all books.
• MP3 Files: Number of MP3 files.
• Ignored: Books ignored by the user. See section on Ignoring books.
• Missing Links: Books that can't be downloaded because a download link from Audible isn't available. See Unsupported Books.
• To Download: Number of books that can be downloaded and that aren't already queued for download.
• To Convert: Number of books that can be converted and that aren't already queued for conversion.
• Downloading: Number of downloads in progress and how many remain in queue.
• Converting: Number of MP3 conversions in progress and how many remain in queue.

Note: Click on the number portion of the library status to filter books by that status. For instance, click on the number next to 'To Download' to see all books that can be added to the download queue for downloading.

Audio Book Info

Information about a selected book is displayed here. This info is collected from web or meta tags and cannot (at this time) be edited.

The blue labels on the left side can be clicked on to filter books by title, author, narrator, genre, or publisher.

Clicking the blue text on the right side will open the browser to display the audible page for the title, author, narrator, genre, or publisher.

The info for each data element is self-explanatory. The State field shows any errors or tasks that can be performed. The ID contains the Product_ID/ASIN.

Ignored Books

Some books in your library might be lame. Maybe you'd rather not see For those books, just select it and Action:Ignore Book to add it to the list of books never to be ignored.

To restore ignored books:

1. Click on the "Ignored:" Library Status in the upper-left of the main window
2. Your ignored books will be shown. Right-click or Action: Unignore Book(s)

Miscellaneous Functions

Exporting

Your audible library can be exported as a web page, json file, or .csv (Excel) file from the File menu, so you'll have a list of all your books.

Importing

Use the File:Import menu, or drag and drop MP3 or AAX files onto the desktop application.

To import a book that contains multiple mp3 files, please see Joining Files in the next section.

Join Audio Files

Some audio books contain multiple mp3 files. To import these into your library, or to simply have a single MP3 file for each book, you can use the Join Audio Files command, under the File Menu. To join audio files into a single mp3 file, choose "Join Audio Files" from the File menu. Select a directory that contains all the audio files. If an image file is present, it will be used as the cover art. Audio files in the directory will be sorted alphabetically and joined. Next, select a destination directory for the output file. It can be the OpenAudible's "temp" directory, or anywhere. After joining, you will be asked if you want to import (move) the file to your OpenAudible library.

Split By Chapter

OpenAudible prefers 1 audio file per audio book. Its how our software was designed. However, many people prefer an audio book split by chapter.

You can now export a single book as a folder of mp3/m4a files. Do put split audio files into the OpenAudible working (mp3/m4a) directories or attempt to import them into OpenAudible, or you could end up with a mess.

1. Select one or more books and select Action:Split by Chapter
and set a destination directory.
2. To Select a file not in your OpenAudible library, select File:Split by Chapter and select any MP3 file you wish to split.
3. Select a destination directory location for the split book parts
4. If chapter data is present, the audio book will be split into multiple chapters, leaving the original file untouched.

Do not import these files into OpenAudible-- OpenAudible is designed for 1 audio file per book.

Additional Help

OpenAudible may stop working at any time, due to changes in Audible systems or web their site. If this happens, check for an update or open issues.

Submitting a bug report from the About menu will send diagnostic information to developers. For best results, restart OpenAudible, reproduce the problem, then fill in the bug report with as many details as possible and click send.

No technical support is provided, no warranty provided, and please do not share your books.

  • Download All from Audible - Downloads all audible books that haven't already been downloaded
  • Convert All to MP3 - Converts downloaded files to MP3
  • Browser - Opens internal browser.
  • Rescan Files - Scans your mp3 and aax files and updates your library

• Actions (acts on selected books)

  • View In Audible - Opens the Browser to the book's Audible page, if available.
  • Show MP3 - Opens Explorer/Finder to display the MP3 in the desktop.
  • Play Audio Book - Opens MP3 using your system's default MP3 player.
  • Download AAX - Downloads selected books from audible
  • Convert to MP3 - Converts selected books to MP3
  • Refresh Info - Gets missing book meta data from Audible web page such as purchase date, duration and cover artwork.
  • Ignore Book - Permanently adds a book to the OpenAudible ignore list. This book will not be shown or exported.

  • Help - Opens the Browser to this page.
  • Project Web Page- Goes to rushbrookrathbone.co.uk
  • Check for Update- Checks with rushbrookrathbone.co.uk to see if a new version is available.
  • Send Bug Report- After experiencing a problem, you may send a bug report to developers. Recent .html, book lists, and tmp files will be collected to assist
  • About Open Audible - The about box and copyright info.

Preferences

Some directories used by the application can be changed. The "Show" button will reveal the directory in the desktop file system.

• Working

  The working directory is where your audio books (AAX, MP3) and artwork files are saved. A tmp directory is also there for temporary files that are deleted on application exit.

• Web/MP3

  The Web directory is a directory that saves the output of a copy of your books saved as a web page. This optional feature is if you want to access your books on your own personal web server. Please ensure that you password protect this file to prevent the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted works.

• Automation

  • Automatically download books - will automatically download books if they aren't already in MP3/AAX format.
  • Automatically convert to MP3 - will automatically convert books that aren't already in MP3 format.
  • Automatically Update Web Page - will automatically rebuild the web page list of your books when the library changes

• Preferences Directory

  The preference files are located in this directory. You can show the directory to see the files. These files can be deleted after uninstalling the application.

  Advanced: To change the location of the OpenAudible settings directory, quit the application, move the directory somewhere else, and define a permanent environment variable "OPENAUDIBLE_HOME" to point to the new location.

Unsupported Books

OpenAudible works with the books you buy that Audible lets you download as "AAX" files. Some books (and most podcasts) are not included as downloadable books. These include many free series, Romance series, podcast episodes, and Audible Prime books.

Audible can download some books in AAXC format, which is not readable by ffmpeg or OpenAudible. Renaming an .AAXC book to .AAX will result in a failed conversion. However, if you downloaded an AAXC file on an Android device, its possible it will be available in your library as a downloadable book.

To check if your book is downloadable, open a regular web browser, click on your library, and search for the name of the book. If there is a "Download" button, it should be available to download. Without a download button, there is usually an explaination of why it can't be downloaded.

If you click on a download link and see a message about "how to listen", you may need to make this setting change.

If you have an AAX file that won't convert, delete or move the file and re-download it using OpenAudible. If there is no "Download" button in the web UI, it means that the file cannot be convert.

Licenses

OpenAudible requires a license to use. A license can be purchased for a low-cost from the rushbrookrathbone.co.uk website. One license can be used on up to one family's personal audible accounts. Not for commercial use. Use only for archiving and backing up your audio book purchases.

Activating the license is done through the About:"License" menu. If the application is unable to create a license online, an offline license tool is available at rushbrookrathbone.co.uk

Uninstalling

Uninstalling uses common practices. If you used an installer, there will be an uninstaller.

Mac and AppImage users can toss the application into the trash.

Your settings files can be deleted, and are saved in the “Working directory” defined in the preferences. On Windows, it is C:\Users\NAME\OpenAudible. On Mac it is /Users/NAME/Library/OpenAudible. On Linux ~/OpenAudible
