While audio porn is nothing new – it’s been around for at least as long as telephones have – when we think about porn, typically it’s the visual variety. But over the last few years, new audible options have emerged, from audio erotica websites to mindful sex apps.

The most simplified definition of audio porn is adult content that you listen to instead of watch. There are a whole host of websites that offer different versions of this, from narrated erotic stories to guided fantasy sessions and orgasm ‘sound libraries’.

‘They range from subtle to very hard-core including podcasts, blog posts, graphic novels, actor-voiced porn scenes, all the way through to instructional sessions and guided masturbation,’ explains Neil Wilkie, psychotherapist and author of Reset: The Relationship Paradigm.

Audio porn vs visual porn

There are several reasons you might choose audio porn over the visual variety. ‘One is about our preferred learning style,’ he says. ‘The main three are visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. If you are predominantly auditory or kinaesthetic, you will probably enjoy listening to the words and sounds rather than looking at images.’

Audio porn allows your imagination to run free, ‘unfettered by the images created by the film producer,’ Wilkie says. ‘It becomes your story, rather than theirs.’ There’s also privacy – you’re in your own personal bubble without the feeling of being ‘watched’ by the actors, he adds.

Plus, audio porn allows you to be in control and turn off distractions, often moreso than visual alternatives. Research by the Kinsey Institute found that 90 per cent of women use so-called ‘mental framing’ (fantasising) to turn off distracting thoughts and focus on pleasure.

‘When you make love, when you orgasm; do you do it with your eyes shut or open?,’ Wilkie asks. ‘If they are shut then this moment of intimacy, where it feels like time stops and nothing else matters, is undistracted by what you can see around you.’
