I tried out the fix from StarTech and it worked. The fix follows:
Click Start, then right-click on Computer, and select Manage. Select Device Manager from the tree on the left, then expand bus controllers. Right click your FireWire chip, select Update Driver, then click to update the driver manually. On the next screen, click Choose From List of Devices. Select the Host Bus Controller (legacy), and click OK. This will switch to the older legacy drivers, and should solve any detection/crashing problems.
The driver worked straight away without any need to re-boot. I plugged the video camera in and downloaded video with no problems.
