Protect Yourself From Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services. You can help protect yourself from scammers by verifying that the contact is a Microsoft Agent or Microsoft Employee and that the phone number is an official Microsoft global customer service number.

Hi,

I will be glad to help you with  the issue you have with the external hard drive.

Some external storage devices work poorly or not at all when connected to a hub; try connecting the drive directly to a port on the computer.

Also check if it’s detected in “Disk Management”.

Here you can verify if the partition and format are correct for the Operating System.

Check the Drive’s status in Device manager.

This will verify if the external drive has a drive letter designation.

Check Partition and Format.

1.     Log in as Administrator account in windows or any other account with administrative privileges

2.     Insert your removable disk into the USB port.

3.     Click Start, right click on computer and select manage.

4.     Now, click Disk Management.

5.     Check whether drive letter for the device is present.

6.     Check the lower window to find whether the device is detected (such as Disk 1, Disk 2, etc).

7.     If the device is detected with a drive letter, verify that no other device is using that drive letter. If it is,

change it to unused drive letter.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

As I stated before hdd is not detectable in device manager nor in disk management. I am connecting hdd to laptop with usb cable. I don't know what is hub.

when i connected it for the first time on windows 10 laptop it worked and i could see it. i just changed the name of HDD and left it connected. after some time i was horrified to find it missing . laptop simply could not recognize it. i tried restart, checked device manager and disk management but could not find it anywhere. I uninstalled some items in device manager  but still no success.

HDD works with vista pc of my friend.

What did you uninstall in the Device Manager?

Some external drives when plugged in show up as an "Initio" device, something you could check - the following link is for external optical drive but the same issue has occurred with external hard drives as here:

Under device manager is there anything with a yellow triangle?

Using command prompt>diskpart is the drive seen?
If so then you can use diskpart to clean the drive then it should be seen by disk management where you will be able to format it - choose MBR to have the drive compatible with previous Windows versions.

If there's something on the drive you wish to keep then plug it into another computer & save the contents.

  • Type in "DiskPart" in command line.
  • Type in "list disk" in command line to show all disks in this machine.
  • Use "select" to set the focus to the specified partition.
    For example "select disk 1".
  • Use "clean" command to remove GPT disk from the current in-focus disk by zeroing sectors.
  1. Go back to Disk Management, you can see GPT disk is "Not Initialized" now.
  2. Within Disk Management, right click on disk info, choose "Initialize Disk", You can see GPT disk is "Unallocated" now.
  3. Right click on disk info, choose "New Partition…", follow Partition Wizard and format it.
